What is the 2 second rule
Leaving a safe gap between you and the vehicle in front is called 'the 2 second rule'.
- 1. Note a roadside feature as the vehicle in front passes it.
- 2. Count how many seconds pass before you reach the same feature.
- 3. If it is less than 2 seconds you are too close.
The good thing about the '2-second rule' is it ensures you keep the correct following distance, no matter what speed you are travelling at.
If it is raining or the road surface is wet and slippery, increase your following distance to 4 seconds.
